This project began as an illustration of a storefront in Japan, rendered in a tight two-color palette of blue and yellow with sparse accents of red and ochre. The linework captures the density of a typical Japanese street scene, tiled rooftops, utility poles tangled with overhead cables, shopfront signage, and the layered facades of buildings that have accumulated detail over decades. The illustration was then extended into a conceptual book cover for an imaginary title, "The Disappearing Face of Tokyo," submitted to Suboart Magazine. The title does the interpretive work: what looks at first like a straightforward urban scene becomes a document of something in the process of being lost, the older, quieter streetscapes of Tokyo slowly replaced by the pressure of a city in constant renewal. The fragmented typography, with "Tokyo" broken and dispersed across the cover, reinforces that sense of something coming apart while still holding together.
